What is an ENG1 medical?
An ENG1 medical is a statutory medical examination carried out by an MCA-approved doctor to assess whether you are medically fit to work at sea. If you meet the required medical standards, an ENG1 certificate will be issued.
How long does an ENG1 medical take?
Please allow approximately 90 minutes for your appointment. This will usually include around 45 minutes with an occupational health technician, followed by approximately 45 minutes with an MCA-approved doctor. Appointment times may vary depending on your medical history and whether any additional information is required.
How much does an ENG1 medical cost?
An ENG1 medical costs £115, payable securely online when you book your appointment.
What happens during the medical?
Your appointment may include a review of your medical history, vision and colour vision assessment, hearing assessment, blood pressure, height and weight measurements, a urine test and a general medical examination.
Can I renew my ENG1 before it expires?
Yes. Many seafarers renew their ENG1 certificate before it expires to help avoid any interruption to their ability to work at sea.
What happens if further assessment is needed?
Having a medical condition does not automatically prevent you from obtaining an ENG1 certificate. If further information or investigations are required, the doctor will explain the next steps during your appointment.
Can I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Yes. Please bring them with you if you normally wear them, as your vision forms part of the medical assessment.
Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?
You can cancel your appointment free of charge by giving at least five working days’ notice. If you need to change your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. Where availability allows, we may be able to move your booking to another time on the same day.
Is free parking available?
Yes. Free parking is available at both our Swansea and Newport clinics.
